PE and Sports Premium

The government provides additional funding  to improve provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport- is being allocated to primary school headteachers. This funding can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools. The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provisiond of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.

School uses this funding to increase and improve the physical education available to pupils and the training and development of staff to provide sustainable improvements to the teaching of PE.

Department for Education Vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium

ALL pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

The funding has been provided to ensure impact against the following OBJECTIVE:

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport you offer.

This means that you should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • increased participation in competitive sport

To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. It is important to emphasise that the focus of spending must lead to long lasting impact against the vision (above) that will live on well beyond the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.

At Ashbury Meadow we are very lucky to be associated with Manchester City's City in the Community, who provide us with  specialist coaches who work with every year group from early years to year6, ensuring pupils receive quality coaching in sports such as tennis, althletics and  ball games . Staff work alongside our coaches to develop their own skills in the delivery of this subject. We also participate in Manchester City's disabilty awareness programme and disability awareness days, the City roadshow, and programme to support pupils' mental health. Our pupils regularly attend City games and are also chosen as mascots. We also participate in tournaments for local schools hosted by Manchester City. We also employ a dance teacher to deliver our dance curriculum. As well as this we compete against a wide range of schools in different sports such as cross country, tag rugby, football and athletics through our membership of School Games and have been awarded School Games Platinum award, we were also awarded Manchester School Sports award in 2022. We also organise local matches with other primary schools and have intra school competitions and activities to target pupils who are reluctant to take part. This last year we have introduced orienteering to our curriculum, not only is this an active outdoor activity, but it supports pupils learning of skills for life through their learning of mapping skills and directional knowledge, as well as teamwork and communication skills. We use the Sports City atheletics arena to host our school sports day, giving pupils the experience of competion at a top class event. We also have a well planned diary of inter and intra Panathlon activities, ensuring all pupils with SEND needs are able to take part in competitive sport.
