Miss Rowlinson
Welcome to year 2, we hope you had a wonderful summer holiday and are ready for a fulfilling year ahead.
The teachers in Year 2 are Miss Rowlinson (2R) and Miss Fox (2F). The teaching assistants are Miss Butterworth (2R) and Miss Almeida (2F).
During the Autumn term, children will be focussing on the topic of weather patterns and seasonal changes in our upcoming Geography unit. In Science – there will be a focus on plants and what these organisms need to grow healthily. In English, children will be learning the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and Amazing Grace with a focus on producing a written narrative consolidating basic punctuation and grammar learned in year 1. In Maths, we will be learning about place value and the difference in numerical values between the tens and the ones in 2-digit numbers.
Knowledge organisers for Geography and Science can be found attached to our class page where the children will find lots of new facts about their topics. These knowledge organisers are banks of information and include facts, diagrams and key vocabulary that the children can refer to throughout each of these topics. The website will be updated every term.
P.E.
Year 2 children will take part in weekly P.E lessons every Wednesday afternoon. Children must come to school in their PE kits (white top, black trousers/shorts/leggings and appropriate trainers). Please make sure children have the correct PE kit.
Reading
Children will be given two books a week to read at home. The first book will be matched to their phonic
ability and will be set on the Collins Ebook app. The second book will be a sharing book. This
is a book the children have chosen themselves. They may not be able to read this independently however it
encourages them to develop a love for reading. Children should read daily for 10 minutes. Children will
be given a reading record to record when they have read to an adult at home. Please sign the reading
record when you have read at home with your child or if they have read independently.
Homework and Spellings
Children will be expected and encouraged to keep up with their weekly home tasks as outlined below:
Reading as outlined above. We also encourage the children to complete around 10 minutes of Lexia weekly to support their reading, writing and spelling further.
Maths homework, which links to the topics we are learning in class, will be set on Mathletics
every Friday. Your child will see 2-3 assigned tasks on their account upon logging in. Children should also be accessing Times Table Rockstar’s and Numbots at home whenever they please.
Children will also be given 10 minutes of topic homework each week which will link to our knowledge
organisers which are attached to your year group’s page. Spellings are handed out on Friday and our spelling test will be on the following Friday.
Times tables
By the end of Year 2, children need to know all times table facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We
will practise regularly and test in school, but it is crucial that children are practising their times tables at home daily for rapid recall. To support them with this, please make sure your child is regularly practising on
Times Table Rockstars as part of their homework.
