Music

Music

Music at Ashbury Meadow is an engaging, inclusive and creative subject which is taught practically. Music is taught through the online scheme Charanga, which is based on the DfE's model music curriculum..  The scheme provides pupils with a practical, ambitious music spiral curriculum that ensures the progression of age-appropriate knowledge and skills. This includes playing an instrument and complete coverage of The National Curriculum with tailored resources for pupils with SEND.

In the Early Years, music is threaded throughout learning activities as well as through the use of Charanga. Years 1-4 and Year 6 take part in weekly whole-class music lessons following the Charanga scheme. In Year 5, pupils have the first access opportunity to Djembe African drumming in weekly, group sessions from a specialised One Education music teacher.

We have adapted the Charanga curriulum to ensure that children learn about composers and music from the past.

Pupils are given the opportunity to listen to, learn and perform music from different composers, musicians, cultures, time periods and genres. Pupils are guided to review and evaluate their own, peers’ and professional music as well as compose their own extracts of music. We value individual expression and respect for others during musical performances, allowing pupils to grow in self-esteem and creative expression in front of a range of audiences.

Musical terminology and vocabulary is embedded within all music lessons from EYFS to KS2, with a high focus on understanding what the vocabulary means and how it can be used effectively to express their music knowledge and opinions.

At Ashbury Meadow, all pupils are given regular opportunities to showcase their learning in singing assemblies and concerts. At the end of each term, parents are invite dto join us at our 'Sing Alongs'. These events are extremely well attended and support pupils’ development of confidence, respect and working as a united team whilst developing their love of music and performance
