Early Years Fondation Stage Curriculum Intent

Within Early Years at Ashbury Meadow, we deliver a topic based curriculum that is centred around the children’s interests and needs; this provides children with the fundamentals for successful learning as they progress through their school career. We aim to inspire and expose our learners to the awe and wonder of the world and equip them with the knowledge and crucial skills needed to support our future communities. Topic headings such as ‘Super hero me’ and ‘It’s a bugs life’ enable children to gain first hand experiences that they might not otherwise have, such as climbing aboard a fire engine or growing their own butterflies. To support physical development in Reception, we use Manchester City in the Community to deliver P.E. lessons. Adult’s take account of what children bring to the setting and use this to develop relationships and distinguish next steps. We place a large emphasis on children’s personal, social and emotional development in order to quickly progress children into independent, resilient and ambitious learners. The ‘rainbow challenge’ encourages children to take ownership of their successes and apply their knowledge and skills across all areas of learning around the continuous provision. The daily use of both WellComm and Elklan strategies to develop pupil’s communication and language skills further supports our success to address gaps in cultural capital exposing them to new vocabulary in modelled and meaningful contexts.
