Mr Hewlett

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to class 6L's page. Here you can find updates on trips, activities and events throughout the school year and receive updates on what year 6 will be learning about each half term.

English: In the new half term we will be learning about World War One. We will be writing letters from soldiers in the trenches based on the Christmas Day truce and we will be writing emotive war poetry based on Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est poem and the artwork Gassed by John Singer Sargent.

Maths: The pupils will be working on a variety of written and mental arithmetic methods involving multiplication, addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals and percentages. The pupils will be investigating a varierty of reasoning problems involving measurements, capacities, weight and money.

Science: Our science topic will be classifying and catagorising living things. We will be studying food chains and webs, making branching diagrams to catagorise animals and learning about different animal classifications.

Theme work: Our topics this half term is Fallen Fields and is all about World War One. We will study how the war started, who allied themselves with whom and creating some war artwork from the trenches.

Using the internet at home or visiting the local library would allow your child to research and increase their learning of the curriculum in the Year 6 curriculum. School will open for Year 6 pupils at 8.15 every school day for pupils wanting to use the school iPads to access Lexia or Mathletics before school - these applications are also avaliable at home and pupils will reguarly have work set for them.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. I would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading.

May we remind you that homework and spellings are given out on a Friday and should be handed in on a Monday or Tuesday by the latest. Spelling tests are also administered on a Friday. PE will be on Wednesday and pupils will need their kits and suitable footwear when taking part
