Year 5G 2018 - 2019

Mr Gibson

Year 5 teacher
Phase leader
Assistant Head

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to Year 5!

This year, the teaching staff in 5G are Mr Gibson and Miss Miller with Mr Jones as the teaching assistant. We are looking forward to working with your children.

Using the internet at home to help further research the topics the children are learning about at school would be a great aid for the children’s learning.

Children will require their PE Kit on a Monday for their PE lesson and a pair of trainers on a Thursday for Commando Joe sessions.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. It is important that you listen to child reading at home at least 3 times per week and record this in their reading records. It will be helpful to ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

Children need to continue to practice their times tables knowledge at home so that they are completely confident in the use of their facts up 12 x 12 and can apply them in their Mathematics.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Monday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday.

Please feel free to come and speak to use at the beginning of the day or on the door at the end of the day.

Children will be learning about narrative writing in class this term. They will be learning about how to write a journey/portal story. Our inspiration for this topic is the book ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’ by Philippa Pearce. The children will study the text in great detail and use it to inspire their reading.

The children will be learning about place value and improving their skills in place value up to one million, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and using and applying these skills in practical problems solving situations. They will also be learning about prime numbers, multiples and factors of numbers.

The children will be learning about animals including humans and will be carrying out investigations over the course of the half-term.

Children will be making their own interactive games during the course of the term and also undertaking learning to provide a greater knowledge and depth over E-Safety.

We will be learning about the topic Time Travellers in our theme work this time. This will include learning about humans change over time, the past of the local area and glimpsing into what the future may hold as well. The children will study the art of Salvador Dali and learn how to manipulate images to show changes of age.

Children will be learning about ‘Why do some people believe god exists?’ in Religious Education.

Children will be partaking in PE lessons every Monday and also take part in Commando Joe’s sessions on a Thursday.

Children will be learning about a variety of different topics in Spanish throughout the year, beginning with colours, numbers, introductions and the local area.

Children will be receiving specialist music lessons allowing them wider opportunities to learn a new instrument this term
