Year 5C 2018 - 2019

Miss Constance

Mr Wall

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to Year 5!

This year, the teaching staff in 5C are Miss Constance as the teacher and Mr Wall as the teaching assistant. We are looking forward to working with your children.

Using the internet at home to help further research the topics the children are learning about at school would be a great aid for the children’s learning.

Children will require their PE Kit on a Monday for their PE lesson. They will need suitable footwear for this.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. It is important that you listen to child reading at home at least 3 times per week and record this in their reading records. It will be helpful to ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

Children need to continue to practice their times tables knowledge at home so that they are completely confident in the use of their facts up 12 x 12 and can apply them in their Mathematics. Regularly practicing basic addition, subtraction and division will also help to speed up their recall and aid their progression.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday.

This half term we will be reading The Northern Lights. This will provide the stimulus for our writing; the children will be creating their own journey stories using the features that make The Northern Lights an effective tale. Once this is complete, we will be moving on to writing to inform using our topic of Stargazers as inspiration.

The children will be refining their geometry skills in maths, reviewing their work on angles and looking into the number of degrees in different types of shapes. We will also be working on statistics this term, as well as honing our place value, multiplication and division skills.

To begin the term, the children will be finalising their work on forces. After this, we will be focusing on our topic, Stargazers, in which we will spend time learning about our solar system.

Children will be making their own interactive games during the course of the term as well as undertaking learning to provide a greater knowledge and depth over E-Safety.

Our topic this half term is Stargazers. During the course of the term, we will learn about the Galileo Galilei, the Space Race, the first woman in space and much more!

Children will be learning about different places of worship.

Children will be partaking in PE lessons every Monday. They will be learning about passing and receiving.

Children will be learning about a variety of different topics in Spanish throughout the year, beginning with colours, numbers, introductions and the local area.

Children will be receiving specialist music lessons allowing them wider opportunities to learn a new instrument this term
