Welcome to Year 1.

We would like to wish you a warm welcome back to Ashbury Meadow. Here you will find information about what we are learning in the Summer term.

In the curriculum this term:

The children will be working on stories with repeated patterns and stories with the same author. They will be imitating, innovating then independently writing their own. The focus is on using a variety of sentence openers, conjunctions and prepositions. Children will continue to check they are using finger spaces, fullstops, capital letters, sounding out what they will write and reading it back. In Summer the children will be focusing on writing instructions and recounts of familiar events. They will be improving these texts using adjectives and then re-writing their own versions.

The children will be learning about position and direction, shape, measuring capacity and applying their addition and subtraction skills to these areas of maths. Please ensure your child can practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s regularly so that they are fluent.

We will be learning about seasonal changes and animals including humans. This time the focus will be on weather symbols and recording weather. Please talk about changes in daylight and watch the weather forecast.

Children will be making an animated book and learning about coding.

theme work:

Art & D&T

The children are studying about ‘London’ this term and will be learning about the Queen and the Royal Family. In geography the children will be looking at maps, including continents and animal habitat.

In PE, children are learning to send and receive in different ways.

A music company will be coming in to school to develop their musical skills.

Using the internet at home or visiting the local library would allow your child to research and increase their learning of the curriculum in the Year 1 curriculum.

Children will need their PE kits every day in school. Can you make sure that this is CLEARLY named.

Children also need their school jumpers CLEARLY NAMED.

Please make sure your child comes to school with a CLEARLY NAMED water bottle. We have limited water fountains in the Year One areas.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. Once read at home their books are changed. Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary when read with them and similarly, we shall make comments back. We would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for 10 minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading and writing. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we continue to look forward to using them effectively with you. If you would like to volunteer reading in school with the children then please let us know.

May we remind you that homework is given out on a Friday and should be handed in on a Monday at the latest.

Spellings will be handed out on a Monday. Please help your children to learn them as they will be tested on Friday. This will also help in their writing. If you would like to know the score please ask the teacher at the end of the day.

Many thanks
